  • The main season is from April to October, with the most consistent winds from June to September. July and August are the peak months of the season so it’s best to book lessons as early as possible. The wind averages but is not limited to 12 - 20 knots. It is also possible to kitesurf all year round, however from November to March there’s only a 50% chance of wind and it’s best to line up some back-up activities in case the conditions are lacking during your entire holiday.

  • The wind in the main season averages but is not limited to 12 - 20 knots, and of course it depends on the forecast for each day. It also depends on your weight, technique, and experience. Generally larger kites are used here. Portugal is not renowned for super strong winds like Brazil or Egypt.

  • The number of lessons varies for each individual, with many factors affecting the rate of progress. The average number of hours people take to be able to ride independently is 12 - 15. If you have high stamina, the lesson duration can be 3 hours each and it could therefore take you 4 - 5 days. If you tire easily or find it difficult to concentrate for 3 hours at a time, you may need to spread out the hours over a longer period of time, or stick to 2 hour sessions. There can be a lot of information to take in, so the better rested you are, the better focused you’ll be! Other factors to consider are how agile you are, if you have previous board/water sports experience, your level of coordination, and your physical fitness to determine how many hours you might need.

If you have reached an independent level of riding after having lessons with us, and then you will kitesurf at another destination at another time, it might be a good idea to take a refresher lesson at the new location to become familiar with the conditions of a new spot under supervision of a local instructor, especially if you’ve had a long break since your lessons with us or if you have bought your own equipment which you are not yet familiar with. We also receive students looking for the same thing here at the lagoon so it is definitely recommended, and will make you a much more responsible kitesurfer.

  • It means you can set up and pack down your kite equipment, launch and land the kite safely, ride upwind consistently, understand the use of safety systems, and perform the self-rescue. It also means being a responsible kitesurfer; respecting others on the water, respecting safety distances, and respecting the location.

At some kite centres around the world, you will need to show a certification of IKO level 3 to be able to rent equipment.

  • In this case it is not recommended for you to take semi-private lessons together. Firstly, the lesson content will be completely different for each of you because you are at different stages. Secondly, in semi-private lessons the two students share 1 kite for safety reasons and take turns every 15-20 minutes. So, the kite must be a suitable size for both of the students, meaning the weight difference should not be more than 15-20kg. Depending on certain wind conditions, a 20kg difference might be too much.

To go forward, we recommend you either come back with a friend who is more similar to you in terms of weight and level, or consider private lessons.

Kitesurfing is a sport that we recommend taking private lessons to learn. It is a high-risk sport that requires a lot of time, patience, and commitment. Therefore, if you have decided to dive into the world of kitesurfing, it is best to give yourself the highest quality of lessons possible. Private lessons ensure maximum efficiency and individually-tailored content. The focus is 100% on you.

  • English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and German.

  • Yes. The overall price will be reflected in how many hours you end up doing in total. If you booked a 6 hour package, but you would like an additional 3 hours, you would pay the 9 hour package price in total. Additional hours are subject to availability at the time of request.

  • We provide wetsuits, radios, booties, and all the kitesurfing equipment. So you just need to bring your swimsuit, towel, water, waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses, and most importantly: yourself + a big smile!

Tip: bring warm clothing to change into afterward, as the wind chill factor at the kite spot makes it much colder than your protected sunbathe spot on the same day ;)

  • Children as young as 9 - 10 years old can start having lessons, with a minimum weight of 35kg. However, it is important to first decide if your child is ready. Consider the following: how well can your child problem-solve? Do they have the maturity to make quick decisions in a calm manner? Do you usually have to follow your child around, doing everything for them? How independent are they? In some cases, youngsters are able to just take the first couple of lessons learning how to fly the kite and do some of the learning exercises while they are still heavily supported by the instructor. They may not have the ability or understanding to progress to being an independent rider until perhaps a couple of years’ time when they have a higher level of maturity and physical coordination.

  • We are based on the West side of the lagoon. The best way to travel here is by hiring a car.

Public transport: you can either take a bus or train from your point of departure to either Óbidos, or Caldas da Rainha. From there, the best way is to take a taxi. The ride is roughly 20 minutes. You can contact us for taxi numbers. Alternatively, there is a bus that goes from Óbidos to Bom Sucesso beach however it only runs twice a day on weekdays only, and the ride is roughly 1 hour.

From Lisbon: Take the Rapida Verde from Campo Grande to Óbidos (8eur each way, 1 hour) and then a taxi (+/- 20eur each way, 20 minutes) from Óbidos.

If you are not staying near the lagoon and are taking public transport each day, the costs of public transport add up to being on par with car rentals, so if you are able to hire a car this will be much more convenient and give you much more freedom.

    Drive times:

    From Lisbon: 1-1.5 hrs

From Caldas Da Rainha/Óbidos/Baleal: 20 minutes

From Foz Do Arelho/Peniche: 30 minutes

    From Nazare: 50min - 1 hour

  • Booking terms:

A €60 deposit per person is required at the time of booking, with free cancellation until 3 weeks before the lesson start date. The remaining payment is required in person when you have your lessons.

    Cancellations:

In case of cancellations made by clients more than 3 weeks before their lesson start date, the deposit is fully refundable. If a cancellation is made by the client less than 3 weeks before their first lesson, the deposit is non-refundable.

In case of cancellations made by clients after 21:00 on the evening before the next lesson, this is considered a last minute cancellation and subject to a €50 fee.

In case of cancellations made by Kitesurf Soul, for reasons including lack of suitable wind/weather conditions, any deposit or pre-payment for lessons not yet taken is fully refundable.

    Refunds:

If a package is paid up front, the eligible refund of hours is calculated as per the following example, and depends on the total number of hours completed by the client.

E.g: client has paid for 12 hours private but was only able to complete 10 hours.

Price of 12 hours private (648). Price of 10 hours private (560).

    648 - 560 = 88eur refundable amount.
